Who are metal braces suitable for?

Metal braces are suitable for everyone!

They can fix major and minor orthodontic issues in all ages. We often recommend conventional braces as an affordable option for complex orthodontic treatment.

“The combination of my clear aligner and fixed brace treatment to correct my bite was a success. Using the Dental Monitoring app meant that Dr. Qureshi could monitor my treatment remotely and provide feedback. Visits to the practice were therefore minimal which was an advantage being a full time university student. I would like to thank Dr. Qureshi and all the team for the support I received during my treatment. I highly recommend Origin Orthodontics”

Eating with braces

Starting braces treatment doesn’t mean you need to give up all your favourite foods. In fact, with a few minor changes, you should still be able to enjoy most of your favourite things. Just remember, it’s important to clean your teeth and appliance after every meal and snack to keep your smile healthy.

Foods you cannot have
Foods you can have
Foods you can have
Soft foods
such as scrambled eggs, pancakes, porridge and pasta
Dairy products
like yoghurt and soft cheese
Meat
cut into pieces or opt for meat balls rather than something you need to bite into
Smoothies
try to order ones without seeds that can get stuck in your appliance
Fruit and vegetables
try grating your apple, rather than biting into it, and cooking your carrots instead of eating them raw
Foods you cannot have
Popcorn
sorry, you’ll need to find a different snack for movie nights! Popcorn kernels can get stuck between your teeth, and require removal of your appliance to retrieve
Hard or chewy sweets and toffees
these can break or dislodge your appliance, as can other hard things like ice cubes
Sugary drinks
we advise you to avoid these all the time anyway, but they can especially increase the risk of decay during treatment
Fingernails
we’re serious - chewing on fingernails or the end of your pen can damage your braces
Pizza crusts
you can still enjoy the topping through

Frequently asked questions about fixed metal and Iconix braces

What’s the difference between fixed metal braces and Iconix braces?

Fixed metal braces are traditional braces that use metal brackets and wires, which are placed on the front of your teeth. Iconix braces feature tooth-coloured brackets, making them less visible compared to regular metal braces. Both types are fixed (non-removable) and effective for straightening teeth.

How do Iconix braces compare to traditional metal braces in terms of comfort?

Iconix braces are designed with comfort in mind, using smooth, rounded brackets to minimise irritation to your mouth. Both these and metal brace options are comfortable once you get used to wearing them.

Will Iconix braces still be noticeable when I smile?

While Iconix braces are made from tooth-coloured materials, they are not fully invisible like lingual braces or clear aligners. However, the brackets blend with the natural colour of your teeth, making them a more subtle option than metal braces.

Can I eat and drink normally with Iconix or fixed metal braces?

Yes, you can eat and drink with Iconix and fixed metal braces, but you'll need to avoid certain foods that are hard, sticky, or crunchy (such as popcorn, nuts, or caramel) as they can damage the braces. It's also important to clean your teeth after meals to prevent food particles from getting trapped.

Can I play sports with Iconix braces?

Yes, you can play sports while wearing Iconix or fixed metal braces, but it’s recommended to wear a mouthguard for extra protection. The brackets and wires can sometimes cause discomfort or injury if you get hit in the face, so protecting your teeth and braces is important during physical activities.

How do I start my treatment journey?

The first step to your dream smile begins with a free consultation with our Treatment Coordinator. During this session, we’ll take photos and scans, discuss the best appliance options for you, and provide an estimate of the fees involved. For a more detailed assessment, specialist orthodontic consultations with Dr Usman Qureshi are available for £160. You can request this by giving us a call.
