Once you finish treatment with braces or Invisalign® clear aligners, we will fit you with a retainer.
Retainers prevent your teeth from shifting back to their original positions - so you can enjoy your smile results for years to come.

Retention is the most important phase of your orthodontic journey. That’s why we use two different types of retainers, to ensure we can recommend the best one for you.
Removable retainers are made from clear plastic and look a bit like Invisalign® aligners.
You can take them out to eat, brush and floss, but should wear them day and night for at least the first three months. Your Specialist Orthodontist will advise you when you can switch to solely nighttime use.
A fixed retainer is a thin wire attached to the back of your teeth.
The wire will hold your teeth in their proper positions - and you probably won’t even notice it’s there. If you get fitted for a fixed retainer, we’ll give you our top tips to keep your teeth clean and healthy while wearing it.
With in-house 3D printing, we can ensure faster delivery and precise, custom-fit solutions for your orthodontic needs. No more waiting - just quicker results for your smile transformation with our specialist orthodontists in Central and North London.
The duration depends on your treatment plan. Initially, you will likely wear your retainer full-time. You will gradually transition to wearing it just at night. It’s important to follow your orthodontist’s guidance, as your teeth can shift back without consistent retainer use.
It’s crucial to continue wearing your retainer as prescribed, even if your teeth feel stable. Teeth naturally shift over time, and retainers prevent any unwanted movement. If you stop wearing it too soon, your teeth may relapse.
If you lose or break your retainer, contact our Mill Hill or Marylebone practice as soon as possible. We’ll arrange a new one and adjust your treatment plan if necessary. It’s important to replace your retainer quickly to prevent any shifting of your teeth.
To maintain your retainer, clean it daily with lukewarm water and mild soap. Avoid hot water, which can distort its shape. Regularly brush it gently with a soft toothbrush.
It’s best to remove your retainer before eating or drinking anything other than water. This helps avoid food particles getting trapped in it, which can cause staining or bacteria buildup.
When you first start wearing your retainer, you might experience some mild discomfort as your teeth adjust. This is normal and should subside after a few days. If you experience persistent pain, contact our team here in London for advice.
